Love hearing this Wendy!! The gouache part of the process certainly has got attention and perhaps Susan will share more about this aspect.
And gosh, you are so welcome! I feel so honoured to have amazing artists share their work and story on this blog!

Maybe we can do an update on this post with a photo of a painting with gouache only Pam!
Love that you shared how you get the feeling of stiffness as a clammer straightens up – soooo true!! I feel it too.

Hey Ruth, I know what you mean!
I’m going to suggest you examine those beautiful drawings Susan included here. Examine how she simplifies the form and try doing the same. (Yes, easier said than done!)

The figures are pitch-perfect and the feeling of hard, wet, messy work is conveyed.
Thank you Susan, it was eye-opening to see these paintings and hear how you go about them–hard work for you, as well.
I also liked the idea of underpainting with gouache.
Thank you Gail–this was wonderful!
Wendy

Stunning work! I went over to Susan’s website and must say – the poses of clammers bent over, leaning on the lop-sided triangle of the legs really catch my eye. I can’t help but ‘feel’ their lowers backs when they straighten up: that painful stiffness you have to ease out of, as you gradually raise your torso up to straight again. If you ever feature Susan’s work again, Gail (and, I hope you do), I would love to see a shot of the gouache-only step, followed by the finished pastel on top. Just to see how much of the paper is covered in gouache first. However Susan does it, the final paintings are rich and very yummy! I’ve been tempted to buy some gouache to try this technique – Susan’s pieces have convinced me to make the investment!

Her paintings are wonderfully expressive! I love doing figures, and wish I had “official” training to learn how to best create them. She excels. Thanks Gail for featuring her this week.

That is a new learning for sure Paula. It will be good to hear further from Susan about using the medium on Pastelmat.
So glad you are as inspired as I am by Susan’s work. And…what is in your area that you can focus on in the same way?

You are right about the word “wow” Kyle! And thank you for noticing and pointing out some of the aspects that make Susan’s work masterful!
