It is ironic how being even more “realistic” than super-realistic, can create the emotional response she is hoping for.

I appreciated reading how she approaches her work. I paint (pastel) predominantly farm animals, local birds and some wildlife. I’ve never been sure whether l’m more realist or hyperrealist, and I always struggle when pastelists suggest I should “loosen up”. I keep going my own way and I just love it when someone says they feel like they could reach into the painting and touch the animal! Realism is it for me!

Thank you so much Gail for featuring Julie Freeman. She thinks and works exactly the same way as I do, I agree with everything she said. I work from my own photos, I love doing animal commissions, I’m a fan of pastelmat and an assortment of pastels, especially Unison.
